The total number of candidates that sat for the Junior National Scholarship and Junior Free Place Examination was 790, of whom 395 passed the examination, and 114 others satisfied the examination requirements for Junior Free Places, though they did not reach Scholarship standard. The number of candidates that passed in the several education districts were as follows : Auckland, 199; Taranaki, 17 ; "Wanganui, 9 ; Wellington, 68; Hawke's Bay, 45 ; Marlborough, 8; Nelson, 17; Grey, 3; Westland, 2 ; North Canterbury, 26; South Canterbury, 8 ; Otago, 60; Southland, 33. The highest percentages of marks gained in the several papers were as follows : English, 86 ; arithmetic, 100 ; geography, 89; general paper, 95 ; drawing, 89. The highest percentage gained by any one candidate on the whole examination was 83. Of the 1,423 candidates for the Civil Service Junior Examination, 773 were seeking appointment in the public service, and 360 passed the examination, 249 of them with credit. Of the successful candidates, those that passed with credit, and such of the remainder as were not over sixteen years of age on the 1st December, 1905, have satisfied the requirements of clause 7 of the Eegulations for the holding of senior free places in secondary schools and district high schools. There were 506 candidates for senior free places only, of whom 342 passed the examination. Of the 141 Civil Service Senior candidates 82 came up to complete examinations in which they had already been partially successful. In all 39 passed the whole examination, one of them with distinction, and there were 87 whose work in certain subjects of the examination was accepted by the Department. The numbers of candidates that entered for different stages of the teachers' certificate examination, with their status at the time of entry, are shown in the subjoined table.
Of the whole number of 843 candidates 208 have passed—29 for Class C, 164 for Class D, and 15 for Class E—229 have obtained partial pass, 45 for Class C and 184 for Class D ; there are 62 whose work in separate subjects of the Class C examination has been accepted by the Department; and 250 candidates, besides 94 absentees, have failed to improve their status. Appended to this report are lists of the examiners and of the successful and partially successful candidates. The examination papers have been printed separately. I have, &c, G.
