Brake-vans. —The number of brake-vans on the Ist April, 1905, was 307, and the number on the line on the 31st March, 1906, was 315. One old four-wheel brake-van was sold and one written off, and are being replaced with standard bogie brake-vans. Ten new bogie brake-vans were built and put into service. The repairs. &c, to brake-vans during the year were as follows : —

Eighteen new bogie brake-vans are under construction. Wagons. —The wagon-stock on the Ist April, 1905, comprised 13,578 wagons, and on 31st March, 1906, the number was 13,812 vehicles. JPive old wagons were sold and are being replaced with 5 new wagons. One old obsolete brake-van was converted to Glass X sleeping-van. Two hundred and thirty-eight new wagons were built and put into traffic. There were also built in the Government Eailway Workshops 4.5 work-train wagons for Public Works Department. The carrying-capacity of wagon-stock has been increabed by 3,456 tons, equal to 3-54 per cent., being an equivalent of 576 ordinary wagons. The following table gives particulars of repairs, &c, to wagon-stock : —

There were under construction at close of year in Government Bail way Workshops 651 wagons, consisting of 143 bogie and 508 four-wheel wagons. Tarpaulins. —The stock of tarpaulins on the Ist April, 1905, was 10,252 tarpaulins, and on the 31st March, 1906, the stock consisted of 10,362 tarpaulins. One hundred and ten tarpaulins were made and added to stock, and 1,375 old worn-out tarpaulins were written off the stock and replaced with a similar number of new tarpaulins manufactured in the Government Eailway Workshops and charged to working-expenses. Sixteen tarpaulins were also made for other Departments. The following table shows the work on tarpaulins for the year:—

Five hundred new tarpaulins were under manufacture at close of year. Stationary Engines and Cranes. —The repairs and renewals to stationary engines and cranes were as follows for the year :—
