Racecourses and recreation-grounds administered under special laws. Christchurch Racecourse, Canterbury Land District. Reserve No. 79, Christchurch Survey District. Area, 300 acres. Improvements now on reserve: Racing and training tracks, buildings, power-house and engine, with 11,000-gaIIOn tank for water-supply, cricket-ground, and bathing facilities for use of trainers and jockeys, and 40 acres plantation. The whole reserve is fenced, partly with post and wire and partly with ditch and bank. Nearly £20,000 has been expended in improvements during the past two years, and the total amount spent in this way since 1884 is £32,000. Maintenance for the same period has cost £10,000. Cromwell Racecourse, Otago Land District. ■ ; '' ' ' Section No. 17, Block 111, Cromwell Survey District. Area, 300 acres. ' ■ Improvements liow on reserve: Large grandstand and luncheon-rooms; ladies', stewards' weighing, and jockeys' rooms; loose-boxes; and large carriage, saddling, and' weighing-fri paddocks, enclosed and subdivided with picket fences and netted. The racecourse proper is a mile and a half long, with a training-track inside. The whole reserve is surrounded with a sevenwire fence, .with iron standards. Frankton Racecourse, Otago Land District Sections Nos. 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 44, 44a, 45, 45a, 46, 47, 48, 64, 65, ' Block I, Shotover Survey District. Area, 139 acres 3 roods 9 perches. Improvements now on reserve: Grandstand, lj-mile racing-track, officials' rooms, saddlingpaddock, fencing, and plantations. Hokitika Racecourse, Westland Land District. ■ Reserve No. 452, Block I, Kanieri Survey District, and the area marked "Racecourse" on the plan of Hokitika. Area, 74 acres 2 roods 20 perches. During the past eight years the stands, booths, &c, on the reserve have been rebuilt, the course remodelled and improved, and all fencing renewed. Proposed improvements: Erection of new stand and other buildings, and improvement to grounds. Hutt Public Park and Racecourse, Wellington Land District. Part of Section No. 12, Hutt District. Area, 89 acres Improvements now on reserve: Grandstand, stewards' stands, tea-kiosk, caretaker's house, stable accommodation, plantation, and fences. The area has been kept clear of noxious weeds, and the drains maintained in good order. The reserve until recently was used by the Wellington Racing Club. Manawatu Racecourse, Wellington Land District. Section No. 537, Manawatu District. Area, 85 acres. Leased to Foxton Racing Club. Improvements now on reserve: Raceourse, training-track, lawn, saddling-paddock, fences, plantation, buildings (grandstand, totalisator-house and conveniences), and sports-ground. £3,500 has been expended by the racing club in improvements. During the ensuing year it is proposed to erect more fences, and repaint the buildings. The area is used for races, football, cricket, sports, and general recreation. New Plymouth Recreation and Racecourse Reserve, Taranaki Land District. Area, 36 acres and 17 perches. Improvements effected : Fences erected, portion used as racing-track, ploughed, &c. Footballground levelled and fenced, and provided with seats and small shed. The reserve contains only a portion of the racing-track used by the Taranaki Jockey Club. A grandstand and other valuable improvements are situated on adjoining freehold property. The Jockey Club has the right, by statute, to hold race-meetings on three days in each year, and that body has also a year-to-year grazing license over the whole area. Oamaru Racecourse, Otago Land District. Sections Nos. 28, 29, 31, 34, 2 of 58, 2 of 60, and 2 of 61, Block I, Oamaru Survey District. Area, 191 acres. Improvements now on reserve: Grandstand and auxiliary buildings, caretaker's cottage, Plumpton, racing and training tracks, 'starting-machine, fences, gates, plantation, water-supply, and reticulation. The whole area is in English grass. It is proposed to repair the fences when funds are available. The reserve is used for races, and is also leased for grazing and as a Plumpton. 6—C. 10.
