EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND. [In Continuation of E.-5, 1893.]

The Chancellob of the Univebsity to His Excellency the Goveenob. My Lobd, —• University of New Zealand, Wellington, 16th May, 1894. I have the honour to transmit to your Excellency herewith the annual report of the Senate of the University, as adopted at the meeting of that body on the 25th April, 1894, in accordance with the provisions of clause 28 of "The University Act, 1874." The report is accompanied by a statement of the accounts of the University for the year 1893, audited as required by the law I have, &c, James Hectob, Chancellor His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow, Governor of New Zealand.
Annual Eepobt of the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of " The University Act, 1874," the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report: — The Senate met at Dunedin, pursuant to the provisions of the University Act, in annual session, on the 28th February, 1891. At that session the Senate made certain amendments to the statutes formerly in force, and these amendments, being embodied in new statutes, have been approved by His Excellency The Court of Convocation of the University met for its eleventh annual session at Christchurch on the 4th January, 1894. The University held during the year 1893 the usual examinations in November and December in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Music. The total number of candidates who presented themselves for all these examinations was 957 The Senate also held special sessions in December, 1893, and in April, 1894, and at these sessions and at the annual session conferred the following degrees after examination The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 45 candidates, the degree of Bachelor of Science on 4 candidates the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 2 candidates , the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery on 1 candidate , the degree of Master of Arts on 14 candidates. In addition, 13 candidates gained Honours in Arts, 1 gained Honours in Science 8 gained Senior Scholarships, 1 gained the Bowen Prize, 12 gained Junior Scholarships, 90 passed sections of examination for various degrees, 23 passed with credit the Junior Scholarship examination ; 392 qualified for matriculation, 44 passed various examinations qualifying for admission to the legal profession, and 2 passed an examination qualifying for a Teachers' Class C under the Education Department. The number of graduates of the University admitted after examination is now as follows Bachelors of Arts (alone), 217; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 3 , Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 9, Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery 3 , Bachelors of Science (alone), 4, Bachelors of Laws (alone), 6 , Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 14, Masters of Arts (alone), 137, Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 11 Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 9, Master of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, 1 Master of Arts and Doctor of Science, 1, Master of Arts and Doctor of Laws, 1, Doctor of Laws (alone), 1, Doctor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, 1, Doctors of Medicine (alone), 4 total, 422. The Senate has this year made complete provision for the details of a curriculum in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, by which students who successfully pass through the courses in these subjects may be admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Science, so that now there is ample provision within the colony for thorough instruction in the highest branches of technical education.
