AUSTRALIAN EMIGRATION TO NEW ZEALAND: COPY OF TELEGRAM FORWARDED BY THE PREMIER OF NEW ZEALAND TO THE PREMIERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES REQUESTING THEM TO STOP EMIGRATION TO NEW ZEALAND.
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 28th June, 1893. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a copy of the cablegram forwarded by the Premier to the Premiers of the Australian Colonies requesting them to stop emigration to New Zealand; the cost of the cablegram to be shown on the return."—(Mr. Pishbb.)
Hon. Premier, Victoria. Wellington, 9th June, 1893. The large number of arrivals in this colony from Australia induces me to inform you that we find it difficult to find employment for those already here, and, with winter approaching, persons without means that come here will only come to endure hardship and privation. Will you be good enough to make this public ? E. J. Seddon, Premier, Wellington. A similar cablegram was sent to Premiers of New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia, and Queensland. Cost of cablegram, £6 4s. 9d.
Approximate Cost of Payer.—Preparation, not given; printing (1,250 copies), 17s.
