On the wind-ing-up of the latter company their lease was sold to Mr. Williams, who subsequently transferred to the Union Steamship Company; and on the surrender of the lease by that company, the Westport Company was allowed to amend the boundaries and take up a new lease, including part of the coal-bearing area of the Koranui leasehold. In July, 1885, the Government agreed to allow these two leases to be worked together, as regards output, on the understanding that the total output in each year from either or both leaseholds should be increased by at least 20 per cent, over the output required bj- the two leases.
