Enclosure. Sir,— Foreign Office, 29th March, 1886. I am directed by Her Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies, copy of a letter which he has received from the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador at this Court, informing his Lordship that the Emperor of Austria-Hungary has deigned to accept a work by Mr. Tregear, of the Survey Department, New Zealand, entitled " The Aryan Maori;" and lam to request you to move Lord Granvillo to cause this resolution, as well as the thanks of His Imperial Majesty, to be conveyed to Mr. Tregear. Tregear, employe dans le " Survey Department " de Wellington, Nouvelle-Zelande, a adresse a Sa Majeste Imperiale et Eoyale, mon auguste Souverain, la priere de voir agreer par l'Empereur et Eoi un exemplaire de son ouvrage intitule " Aryan Maori." Je viens d'etre informe que Sa Majeste a gracieusement daigno agreer l'ofire do Monsieur Tregear, dont le livre sera place dans le bibliotheque de la famille Imperiaie et Eoyale. Par consequent, j'ai l'honneur de recourir a l'obligeante entremise de votre Excellence en la priant de vouloir bien faire informer le Sieur Tregear, par la voie competente, de cette resolution, et lvi faire transmettre les remerciments de mon auguste maitre. No. 33. (New Zealand, No. 29.) Sic,— Downing Street, 27th. April, 1886. With reference to your Despatch No. 14, of the 28th of January last, and to previous correspondence, respecting the receipt by Major-General Steward of remuneration for services rendered to certain Australasian Colonies, I have the honour to transmit to you, for the information of your Government, a copy of a letter from the War Office, with its enclosure, on the subject. Enclosure. Sic, — Financial Secretary's Department, War Office, 20th April, 1886. With reference to your letter of the 18th ultimo, I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to transmit, for the information of Earl Granville, the enclosed copy of a letter addressed by this office to the Treasury, respecting the receipt by Major-General E. H. Steward of emoluments from certain Australasian Colonies, and of the reply thereto. I have, &c, The Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, S.W. H. T. De la Beee.

Sub-Enclosure 1. Sic, — Financial Secretary's Department, War Office, 30th March, 1886. With reference to Mr. Cole's letter of the 26th September, 1883, No. 15417/83, conveying the sanction of the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to a proposal from this office that the Hon. Major-General E. H. Steward, late Eoyal Engineers, should be allowed to draw his retired pay of £600 a year notwithstanding his receipt of fees from the Governments of New Zealand and Victoria, so long as his emoluments from such employment do not exceed £638 15s. a year, I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to state that Major-General Steward commuted his retired pay on the 14th November, 1883, and to transmit to you the enclosed papers, which show that he is now employed in connection with the ordering and inspection of war material for the Colonies of New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania. In these circumstances, the Secretary of State assumes that, tinder the proposed now rules with regard to the retired pay of officers in colonial employment, Major-General Steward may be allowed to draw the colonial emoluments granted to him in respect of the employment above referred to in full, notwithstanding the fact that he has commuted his retired pay.
