5 receivers were abolished, viz. : New Plymouth, 1; Wanganui, 1; Christchurch, 1; Dunedin, 1; and Invercargill, 1. The total number of pillar, wall, and lamp-post receivers was increased to 202. 48 additional post offices were established, 4 reopened, and 18 closed during the year:— Opened.

The following changes in the names of the post offices were made : Millar's Plat to Ettrick, Upper Waianiwa to Waianiwa, Wainui (Napier) to Herbertville, Hampden (Westport) to Murchison, Waihola Gorge to Millburn, Tokomairiro to Milton, Hokianga to Herd's Point, Kopuru to Te Kopuru, St. Andrew's (Auckland) to Kennedy's Bay, Te Wharau to Opua, Kaikora (Napier) to Kaikora North. Government Insurance agencies were established at the post offices at Ohaeawai and Ormondville. Amalgamation with the railway was carried out at Kaikora (Napier), Lincoln, Methven, Tinwald, and Ngaroto. The Saturday night attendance at Sydenham for tho receipt of savings-bank deposits was abolished, owing to the decrease in the number of transactions. Late-letter boxes were affixed to the trains running on the Auckland lines, and also on the Blenheim-Picton trains. The private-box lobbies at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin are now open on Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. 25 newspapers were registered during the year for transmission through the post; and altogether 167 newspapers'* have.. been registered in the General Post Office. Of these, 47 are published daily, 12 thrice weekly, 23 twice weekly, 53 weekly, .1 fortnightly, and 31 monthly. 11 magazines were also registered; and 156 of this class of publication have been admitted to the privileges of the magazine post since it was established,
