I have the honour to submit the following report on the various works completed and in progress in the Middle Island during the past financial year. In order to facilitate comparisons the report will, as in former years, be divided into the following heads: 1. Eailways; 2. Eoads and Bridges; 3. Water-races; 4. Miscellaneous Works; 5. Buildings; 6. Surveys; and 7. General Bemarks. EAILWAYS. Genebab. The following statement shows the rate at which the several railways in the Middle Island have been constructed during each financial year, further details being given in the table hereto appended (Enclosure No. 1): — Lengths of Railway opened in Middle Island during Financial Year.

* In addition to these amounts a sum of £303,103 15s. Bd. has been expended, and liabilities amounting to £286,145 10s. 2d. incurred, in the purchase of permanent way and rolling-stock for lines in the North and Middle Islands, which is at present in stock,
