No. 1. (Circular —1.) Sir,— Downing Street, 29th October, 1883. I have the honour to transmit to you the accompanying copy of a letter from the Board of Trade, enclosing a copy of " The Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks Act, 1883," and to recommend, for the favourable consideration of your Government, the suggestion of the Board that Colonies which have Patent Laws of their own should make arrangements under section 104 of the Act for the mutual protection of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks. I am directed by the Board of Trade to call your attention to the provisions of section 101 of " The Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks Act, 1883," a copy of which is enclosed herewith, and to request that you will move Earl Derby to cause communications to be addressed to those Colonies which have Patent Laws of their own, and to suggest that they should be invited to make arrangements under that section for the mutual protection of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks. I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to transmit to you a copy of a letter which has been received in this Department from Mrs. John Brown, relative to property alleged to have been left by her late uncle, Peter Eerguson.
