COST AND AVERAGE EARNINGS OF PRISONERS (RETURN OF), IN THE SEVERAL GAOLS OF THE COLONY FOR 1881.
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 25th May, 18S2. " That there be laid on the table (1) a return of the average cost of each of the prisoners in the several gaols of the colony, from the Ist January to the 31st December, 1881; and (2) a return of the average earnings of each prisoner for the said period, specifying the amount of these earnings month by month, and distinguishing between the amount earned by skilled and unskilled labour respectively, and setting forth the amount earned by each particular trade comprised in the former category."— (Mr. Hutchison.)

Total earnings, £326 Bs. 9d. Skilled workmen, none. Unskilled workmen, daily average, 38; average monthly earnings, 12s. 7d. Women, daily average, 18 ; average monthly earnings, 3s. 9d. Cross annual cost per prisoner, £33 Is. 2d. Net annual cost per prisoner, £27 14s. Id.
