Keturn gave cost at .€261,722, but £28,000 of this is here debited to Westland, being before separation. £28,000 is added to cost (£33,604) given in Keturn, being money expended by Canterbury before separation. A great proportion of the cost must be debited to gold-field administration, which gives little or no acreage results. The surface of this province is also abnormal, being almost entirely covered with forest, and the settlements are made in small areas, at widely separate localities, demanding extensive line-cutting.
