4. A copy of the Statutes and Regulations so amended is herewith, as directed by the Act, submitted for the approval of the Governor. 5. The Senate desire to draw the attention of the Government to the necessity of defining and proclaiming the reserves specified as requiring to be defined and proclaimed within six months after the passing of "The University Reserves Act, 1875." 6. The Senate have expressed by resolution their opinion that a Bill should be introduced, during next session of the Assembly, to vest in trustees the reserves included in "The University Reserves Act, 1875," for the purpose of promoting higher education in the provinces in which such reserves are situate. 7. The affiliated institutions have continued to do their work satisfactorily during the past year. The Senate regard with pleasure the interest taken by these institutions in the proceedings" and examinations of the University. 8. The Bowen Prize was awarded, in accordance with the report of the Examiners, to Frederick Fitchett, of Christchurch. 9. Twenty-one students passed the Matriculation Examination during the year ending 31st December, 1876. The number of undergraduates whose names are on the books of the University is now seventy-seven. 10. In the month of May last an examination was held for Junior Scholarships, the B.A. decree, and Senior Scholarships. For the first, twenty-four candidates presented themselves, of whom four succeeded in gaining Junior Scholarships. 11. The Senate has held two examinations, one in May and one in November of the past year, for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, at which two undergraduates succeeded in passing, and accordingly the Senate has conferred that degree upon them. 12. The Senior Scholarship Examinations were, like the other examinations, conducted by two Examiners in each subject, and, as the Examiners did not concur in their award, the Senate adjudged Senior Scholarships to two of the candidates. 13. An examination for Honors was held in November, and the Examiners report that the only graduate who presented himself for that distinction has passed his examination with great credit, and his name has been placed in the first class. 14. A statement of the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending 28th February, 1877, is appended to this report. Henry John Tancred, Chancellor.
