line should follow the right-hand track, crossing the Waiau River near its junction with the Mason ; thence up the valley of the latter river, and over what appears to be called the Whale's Back, a high saddle; and from that point by the best route the country affords to the Kaikoura Township; thence by the line of the coast to Blenheim. I have merely referred to this matter as showing another of the variety of opinions that exist upon this subject. I know of no part upon the second line where I have reason to believe there will be any other but ordinary earthwork, except that of the approaches to Jollies and Ward's Pass, where rock will be met with.
