1873. NEW ZEALAND.

IMMIGRATION TO NEW ZEALAND.

TELEGEAMS BETWEEN THE AGENT-GENERAL AND THE HONS. MESSES. VOGEL AND EEYNOLDS, WHILE IN AUSTRALIA.

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by command of His Excellency. Extracts from Telegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 24th December, 1872:—"To Henty, for Vogel, Melbourne—Unless Saville's contract renewed, impossible carry on emigration present state. Requisite shipping unprocurable. Dublin Agency established.—Featherston." Extracts from Telegram to Agent-General, dated Melbourne, 4th January, 1873:—"Do not renew Saville's contract without express instructions. Government earnestly desire you immediately arrange and work with Auld. Also take over Henderson's contract. Immigrants much wanted. Too few arrive. Telegraph what doing immigrants Auld.—Vogel, Reynolds." Extracts from Telegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 10th January, 1873 : —" To Vogel, Melbourne. Obeyed. Don't imperil thousands lives intrusting service inexperienced hands. Time making arrangements short. No contract ever between Auld, Henderson. Birch Seaton instructed. All possible done promote Clyde emigration Otago.—Featherston." Extract from Telegram to the Agent-General, dated Melbourne, 18th January, 1873:—"What number immigrants sailed December and January ? "—Vogel." Extract from Telegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 18th January, 1873 : —" To Vogel, Melbourne. Emigrants sailed December two hundred. Sail January estimated four hundred. At present emigration slack.—Featherston." Extract from Telegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 24th January, 1873: —" To Vogel Sydney. ' Palmerston' spoken 31st October, five east longitude, thirty south latitude. Government refuse telegraph vessels' arrival. Channel disasters seriously check emigration.—Featherston." Telegram from Hon. J. Vogel to Agent-General, dated Sydney, 29th January, 1873:—"Having communicated with New Zealand, the Government instruct you absolutely not to renew contract with Shaw Saville.—Vogel." Extract from Telegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 7th February, 1873 :—" To Vogel, Reynolds, Sydney. Emigration regulations attended according to instructions. Tender for emigration ships for June invited immediately.—Featherston." Extract from Telegram to Agent-General, dated Sydney, 10th February, 1873:—" How emigration progressing?—Vogel, Reynolds."
