Sir.— * 1 have the honour to acknowledge the receipt-of your Despatch, No. 72, of the 4th of July, transmitting for my information accounts from various trustworthy sources of the intentions of the Natives of the Waikato, and reporting tho detention of the 65th Eegiment by your orders after consultation with Lieutenant-Gcneral Cameron. In thus detaining this Regiment in the very critical state of affairs, I have to inform you that I consider you were perfectly justified.
