RELATIVE TO THE DESPATCH OF REINFORCEMENTS OF TROOPS TO NEW ZEALAND.
No. 1. COPT of DESPATCH from majoh-gexeral sie r. napier, k.c.b., to his excellency sir GEORGE GREY, K.C.B. Fort William, 22nd September, 1863. Sir, — 1 have the honor to forward for your Excellency's information the accompanying copy of a Despatch from the Eight Honourable the Secretary of State for India, No. 290 of the Bth August, and of the reply of the Government of India, No. 282 of this date, regarding the despatch of reinforcements to New Zealand. 2. These papers will afford you full infoi'mation as to the measures which have been adopted, and which will, I trust, be satisfactory to your Excellency. I have, &c, E. No. 2. SIR CHARLES WOOD, BAJtT., G.C.8., TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-UENERAL OE INDIA. India Office, London, Bth August, 1863. Mr Lord, — Her Majesty's Government having received intelligence from Sir George Grey, the Governor of New Zealand, that there is reason to apprehend a serious outbreak of hostilities with the Native Tribes, have determined on taking measures for sending a large reinforcement of troops lo that Colony. 2. The readiest mode of effecting this object is by despatching troops from India, and therefore the following measures have been determined upon, which are to be carried into execution without delay, unless your Excellency shall receive intelligence from New Zealand of such a character as may induce you to modify the proposed arrangements, or to suspend all further proceedings. 3. His Eoyal Highness the Field Marshal Commanding-in-Chief has informed me that the live Regiments of Foot under orders to return to England from ludia this season, stand in the following order for relief : — 74th Regiment l-13th 69th 68th 43rd
