I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch of the 19th February last, No 18 recommending that some distinction should be conferred upon Major Charles St. John Herbert of the New Zealand Militia, ' The'Statutes of the Order of the Bath preclude the conferring upon Major Herbert the distinc tion of Companion in the Military Division of the Third Class of the Order, but I have much pleasure in informing you that his name will be submitted to Her Majesty for that distinction in the Civil Division of the Order for his distinguished services during the late Native war. I have, &c, Governor Sir George Grey, K.C.B. Newcastle.
