KAURI-GUM INDUSTRY (REPORT ON THE) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st MARCH, 1944

Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, 4th July, 1944. 1 have the honour to submit herewith the annual report under the Kauri-gum Industry Amendment Act, 1914, for the year ended 31st March, 1944. I have, &c., R. G. Macmorran, Under-Secretary. The Hon. the Minister of Lands.

Mainly on account of man-power difficulties, the amount of kauri-gum placed on the market dwindled still further during the past year, while the greater portion available comprised chips of a generally poor quality. . . There was an excellent demand for the gum, which is used both overseas and m the Dominion in the manufacture of varnishes. The overseas exports comprised mainly chips, and the demand considerably exceeded the supply. , . . . . Prices rose on an average about 15 per cent, over those existing during the previous During the year 851 tons of gum were exported, of a total value of £59,287. Kauri-gum Industry Account The assets of the Kauri-gum Industry Account have been realized and the account has been abolished by statute.
