PART I.—FRIENDLY SOCIETIES Legislation Loans to Assured Members Section 7 of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1942, amends the Friendly Societies Act, 1909, as follows - a , A r l This section shall be read together with and deemed part of the Friendly Societies Act, 1909 (m this section referred to as the principal Act). (2) Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the principal Act, where the rules of a registered society or branch provide that a member who elects to cease contrLutinS for a sum payable at death or on survival to a specified date shall be entitled on such election to receive a cash payment, the society or branch may (if its rules so provide) make a loan o any member entitled to cease contributing as aforesaid of an amount not exceeding ninetv per centum of the cash payment to which the member would be entitled if he elected on the day the loan is granted so to cease contributing. United Friendly Societies' Dispensary, South Canterbury United Friendly Societies' Association, Taranaki Hospital District Friendly Societies' Association, Paparoa Miners' Medical Club, and Wharerata Medical Association. S.A.S. : Auckland Co-operative Money Society. The following amalgamations were registered —M.U.1.0.0.F. : Marlborough District with Wellington District (New Zealand), Morven Lodge with Heart of Friendship Lodge (South Canterbury District). There were 1,094 registrations at 31st December, 1942. Rules The rules of thirty-three societies and branches were amended during 1942, three by complete amendment and thirty by partial amendment. Statistics of Membership and Funds The number of members of 935 lodges* at the end of 1942 was 91,522, as compared with 96,765 at 194 J. This shows a decrease of 5,243, equal to 5-42 per cent., as compared with 4-73 per cent, for 1941. The total funds of the societies and branches as at 31st December, 1942, amounted to £5,790,521, made up as follows : Sick and Funeral Funds (inclusive of amounts transferred to special funds out of surplus), £5,262,669 ; Medical and Management Funds, goods, &c., £527,852. Dividing the total funds by the number of members at the end of the year it is found the average capital per member is now £63 ss. sd. The following statement shows the disposal of the total funds (including those of the central bodies) as at the 31st December, 1942 : —

The number of members sick during 1942 was 18,115, equal to 19-8 per 100 members at risk. The sickness experienced during 1942 was 318,102 weeks, equal to 17 weeks 3 days per sick member, and 3 weeks 3 days for each member at risk. Mortality The number of members who died during 1942 was 1,371, equal to 14-46 per 1,000 members at risk. The number of wives of members who died was 414. Sick and Funeral Funds The contributions and entrance fees paid to Sick and Funeral Funds in 1942 amounted to £168,206. Divided by the mean number of members, the average for 1942 was £1 15s. 9d., as against £1 15s. 7d. for 1941. The interest and rent received by the lodges and central bodies amounted to £202,971 in 1942, equal to £2 3s. Id. per member, as against £2 os. 3d. for 1941. The amount of sickness benefit paid was £185,517 in 1942, equal to £10 4s. lOd. per member sick* and £1 19s. sd. per member, as against £8 lis. Bd. and £1 15s. 4d. respectively for 1941. Viewing the amount paid in relation to the weeks of sickness, the average benefit per week is found to be lis. Bd. in 1942, as against lis. 4d. for 1941. The funeral benefit paid amounted to £70,101 in 1942, equal to 14s. lid. per member, as compared with lis. 4d. for 1941. The total worth of the Sick and Funeral Funds at the beginning of 1942 was £4,613,139, and at the end of the year £4,714,142. Investment of Funds The net income from investments credited to the Sick and Funeral Funds for 1942 amounted to £202,971, the average rate being £4 9s. per cent., as against £4 9s. lid. in 1941. PART lI.—TRADE-UNIONS The registration of one trade-union was cancelled during the year—viz., The New Zealand Workers' Union. There were five unions on the register at the end of the year.

* The word " lodge " when applied to all societies is to be understood as embracing the synonymous terms " court," " tent," &c., as used in the various orders.
