ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 14th Day of July, 1938. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting, by leave, of eleven members, to consider all matters in connection with industries and commerce that may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Barrell, Mr. Hodgens, Mr. Holland, Mr. Holyoake, Mr. Hunter, Mr. McKeen, Mr. Petrie, Mr. Richards, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Wilkinson, and the Mover." —(Mr. O'Brien, for the Hon. Mr. Sullivan.) Friday, the 15th Day of July, 1938. Ordered, " That ail petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1937-38 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. Mr. Savage.) Thursday, the 28th Day of July, 1938. Ordered, " That the petition of the Automobile Association South Taranaki, Incorporated, and others be referred direct to the Industries and Commerce Committee."—(Mr. Dickie.)

REPORTS. No. 152/1937-38. —Petition of M. Thornton and 19 Others. Praying that certain proposals for the organization of the pharmacy industry be not adopted. I have the honour to report that the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 11th August, 1938.
No. 34. —Petition of D. W. McFadden and 63 Others. Praying for a license to undertake the retail sale and distribution of motor-spirit. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 25th August, 1938.
No. 52/1937-38. —Petition of E. Morgan and 559 Others. Praying (1) That legislation be enacted to regulate the sale of electrical goods ; (2) provide for the registration of firms dealing in electrical goods ; (3) that the sale of unassembled wiring accessories be prevented. I have the honour to report that the Industries and Commerce Committee has carefully considered this petition, and in regard to paragraph (1) in the prayer of the petition the Committee recommends that this paragraph be referred by the Government to the Hon. the Minister of Public Works and the Now Zealand Standards Institute for the purpose of developing and issuing standard specifications that will be used to control the sale and use of electrical appliances, consideration also to be given to the issue of a standard mark on approved apparatus, on a voluntary basis, for the guidance of the purchasing public. (2) The Committee is of opinion that whatever steps may be necessary should be taken to ensure the effectiveness of the Wiring Regulations 1935, particularly Regulation 13-03. (3) With regard to paragraphs (2) and (3) in the prayer of the petition, the Committee has no recommendation to make. The Committee recommends that this report be referred to the Government for consideration. 25th August, 1938.
No. 52. —Petition of Automobile Association South Taranaki, Incorporated, and 2,972 Others. Praying that the Motor-spirits Prices (Taranaki-Wellington) Regulations 1937 be revoked, and in lieu thereof regulations be enacted basing the retail price of petrol throughout Taranaki on the landed cost of petrol at the Port of New Plymouth. I have the honour to report that the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 14th September, 1938. J. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Industries and Commerce Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Mr. Hodgens, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 14th September, 1938. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Industries and Commerce Committee desires to record its appreciation of the services rendered by the Clerk, Mr. M. S. Pasley, in the discharge of his various duties during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. 14th September, 1938.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Industries and Commerce Committee, consisting of eleven members, has held seven meetings during the session, with an average attendance of live members. Four petitions were referred to the Committee, and reported on to the House. 14th September, 1938. J. Hodgens, Chairman.
