Extracts from, the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 29th Day op September, 1937. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all matters relating to schoolteachers, education, and public instruction generally, public-school training of teachers, higher education, technical education, manual instruction, and such other matters affecting education as may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Atmore, Mr. Bodkin,, the Rev. Mr. Carr, the Hon. Mr. Cobbe, Mr. Herring, Mr. McCombs, the Rev. Mr. Nordmeyer, Mr. Petrie, Mr. Smith, and the Mover." —(Right Hon. Mr. Savage, for the Hon. Mr. Eraser.) Thursday, the 30th Day or September, 1937. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1936 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. Mr. Savage.) Tuesday, the 15th day op March, 1938. Ordered, "That the Education Committee have power to sit during the recess and for fourteen days after the commencement of the next session at such times as the Committee may see fit, with power to consider the principles and provisions of the Education Amendment Bill to be introduced this session, both generally and in relation to the principal Act: the Committee to report to the House before the expiration of fourteen days after the commencement of next session, and to have power meantime, where it thinks fit so to do, to advise the Government from time to time on any of the aforementioned matters." —(Hon. Mr. Fraser.) Tuesday, the 15th Day op March, 1938. Ordered, " That the name of the Hon. Mr. Cobbe be discharged from the Education Committee, and that of Ml Dickie substituted therefor."—(Hon. Mr. Eraser.)

REPORTS.

No. 292,—Petition of E. Marryatt, Teacher, of Hataitai, Wellington. Praying that he be allowed to continue in his present position until the completion of forty years' service. I have the honour to report that the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 9th November, 1937.

No. 36.—Petition of C. B. Arnold, School-teacher, of Akaroa. Praying for restoration of an allowance payable while occupying the position of senior secondary assistant teacher at the Akaroa District High School. I have the. honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 17th November, 1937.

No. 223/1936. —Petition of Eva M. Chillingworth, of 450 Madras Street, Christchurch. Praying for inquiry and compensation in respect of her service as a school-teacher under the Education Department. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 17th November, 1937.

No. 97,—Petition of J. S. Mackenzie, of 514 Adelaide Road, Wellington. Praying for reinstatement in the Education Department. I have the honour to report that the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 15th March, 1938.

No. 122. —Petition of Mary Schultz, of 393 Barbadoes Street, Christchurch Praying for a compassionate grant in consideration of services rendered as a school-teacher, and other relief. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 15th March, 1938.

No. 133,—Petition of Alma B. Davies, of Junction Street, Paeroa. Praying that her name be reinstated on the Teachers' Register, and that she be granted compensation for alleged loss of salary and her means of earning a livelihood. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a view to securing some suitable position for the petitioner. 15th March, 1938. Rev. Clyde Carr, Chairman.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Education Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Rev. Clyde Carr, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. W. A. Bodkin, a Member of the Committee. 15th March, 1938.

Special report. I have the honour to report that the Education Committee desires to record its appreciation of the capable manner in which the Clerk, Mr. M. S. Pasley, has discharged his various duties during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. T. H. McCombs, for Chairman. 15th March, 1938.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Education Committee, consisting of ten members, has held four meetings during the session, with an average attendance of six members. Eleven petitions were referred to the Committee ; of these, six were considered and reported on to the House. Five petitions are held over until next session. Rev. Clyde Carr, Chairman. 15th March, 1938.
