ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 22nd Day oe September, 1937. Ordered, " That the petition from G. V. Smith and others presented on Tuesday, the 21st day of September, be referred direct to the Public Petitions A to L Committee when set up."—(Mr. Hultqitist.) Wednesday, the 29th Day oe Septembeb, 1937. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of Mr. Cotterill, Mr. Endean, the Hon. Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Hultquist, Mr. Neilson, Mr. Roy, Mr. Schramm, Mr. Sexton, Mr. Thorn, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Parry.) Thursday, the 30th Day of September, 1937. No. 192/1936. —Petition of M. Kostanich, of Auckland. Praying for additional compensation in the form of a weekly allowance in respect of injuries received while in the employ of the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that the member presenting the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 27th October, 1937.

No. 206/1936. —Petition of R. P. Jamieson, of Walton. Praying that his total period of service with the Education and Mines Departments be counted for superannuation purposes on payment of back contributions. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th October, 1937.

No. 209/1936. —Petition of W. Black, of Timaru. Praying for the cancellation of the second mortgage on his property. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th October, 1937.

No. 214/1936.—Petition of J. Dineen, of Christchurch. Praying for permission to complete a contract in connection with licensed railway refreshmentrooms at Ashburton. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th October, 1937.

No. 225/1936—Petition of J. B. Blinkhorne, of Palmerston North. Praying for reinstatement in the Railways Department. I am directed to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition and has no recommendation to make. 27th October, 1937.

No. 255/1936. —Petition of R. H. Dalhousie, of Wairoa. Praying for compensation for injuries allegedly sustained while employed by the Public Works Department at Lake Waikaremoana. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that a grant of a compassionate allowance be made to the petitioner on account of the injury he has sustained 27th October, 1937.

No. 254/1936. —Petition of J. A. Hart, of Greymouth. Praying for additional compensation for losses sustained in connection with the construction of the Milford Sounds Hostel. I am directed to report that the Committee is of the opinion that the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and recommends that an additional payment be made to the petitioner. 4th November, 1937.

No. 281/1936. —Petition of C. E. Gregory, of Invercargill. Praying for compensation and re-employment in the Railways Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that the petitioner be allowed to appeal with a view to his reinstatement in his former position, 4th November, 1937.

Praying for compensation for injuries allegedly received whilst travelling on the New Zealand Government Railways. . . , , I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 4th November, 1937.

No. 22. —Petition of G. V. Smith, and 10 Others. Praying that a Commission of inquiry be set up to investigate certain matters in Cook County. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration, as a matter of Government policy is involved. 4th November, 1937.

Praying that his salary as an officer of the Post and Telegraph Department be reinstated as from date of degrading, and that he be granted the increments and grading to which he would have been entitled had such degrading not taken place. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make, and is of the opinion that the petitioner should apply under the provisions of section 62 of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 1927, for an increased allowance. 10th November, 1937.

No. 57. —Petition of The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand Industrial Union of Workers. Praying that the period served as juniors by certain individuals prior to the 15th December, 1913, be taken into account when determining their total length of service for classification purposes, or, alternatively, when promotions are being made such service be counted for seniority purposes. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th March, 1938.

I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions A to L Committee passed the following resolution : " That this Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the very capable and impartial manner in which the Chairman, Mr. F. W. Schramm, has presided over its deliberations during the session, and directs that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House." J. B. F. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions A to L Committee passed the following resolution : " That this Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the efficient manner in which the Clerk, Mr. R. L. Cross, has carried out his duties during the session, and directs that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House." 15th March, 1938.
