ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 6th Day of September, 1935. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from Ato L that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House: The Committee to consist of Mr. Ansell, Mr. Healy, Mr. Jones, Mr. Macpherson, Mr. McDougall, Mr. W. W. Massey, Mr. Richards, Mr. Schramm, Mr. Wright, and the Mover." —(Right Hon. Mr. Forbes, for the Hon. Sir Alfred Ransom.) Tuesday, the 10th Day of September, 1935. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1934-35 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. No. 154, 1934-35,—Petition of H. L. P. Dyett and 30 Others (representing the Karori and Northland Progressive Associations). Praying that legislation be enacted empowering the Wellington City Council to lay a double tramway track via Bowen and Museum Streets. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1935.
No. 349, 1934-35.—Petition of R. W. Campbell and Another. Praying that their convictions on a criminal charge be quashed. I am directed to report that as the petitioners have not exhausted their legal remedy the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1935.
No. 356, 1934-35.—Petition of The Corporation op the Mayor, Councillors, and Burgesses op the Borough op Lower Hutt. Praying for compensation for loss of rates incurred in regard to lands mortgaged to the Crown. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The amount of the loss stated in the petition was £30,123 6s. lid., but this was amended in evidence to £20,461 25., and the petition should be read subject to this alteration. 10th October, 1935.
No. 364, 1934-35. —Petition of T. Flaws, of Master ton. Praying for compensation on account of damage to his property allegedly caused by the destruction during a storm of trees growing on a railway reserve. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1935.
No. 7. —Petition of W. P. Pinch and Another. Praying for recovery of architects' fees and other expenses incurred arising out of the erection of certain business premises under the provisions of the Hawke's Bay Earthquake Act, 1931. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1935.
No. 10.—Petition of R. P. Brett and Another. Praying for a refund of stamp duty. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. E. F. Healy, Chairman. 10th October, 1935.
No. 26.—Petition of H. Cunninghame and 4,536 Others, and 6 Similar Petitions as per Schedule attached. Praying that legislation be enacted providing for the taking of a poll on the question of constituting a national Saturday half-holiday. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitions should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration.

No. 370, 1934-35,—Petition of Edith M. Hunter, of Wellington. Praying for a compassionate grant in consideration of her late husband's services as a member of Parliament. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 25th October, 1935.
No. I.—Petition of C. H. Hogg, of Wellington. Praying for compensation for injuries allegedly sustained while employed by the Post and Telegraph Department and for reinstatement. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration; the Committee considers that as the petitioner's condition is due to his war service he should be granted an additional allowance under the War Pensions Act or the War Veterans Act. 25th October, 1935.
No. 3.—Petition of J. A. Cruickshank, of Palmerston North. Praying for an annual allowance or compensation in consideration of his services as a member of the Police Force. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration; and the Committee recommends that a compassionate allowance of £300 be granted. 25th October, 1935.
No. 48.—Petition of T. J. Grant and 5 Others (representing the Thorndon Branch of the Unemployed Workers Movement). Praying for increased unemployment sustenance payments. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 25th October, 1935.
No. 50. —Petition of F. W. Garner and Another. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of injuries allegedly sustained while employed by the Railways Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 25th October, 1935.
No. 59.—Petition of C. Leathem, of Hawera. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of an injury allegedly received while employed by the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration; and the Committee recommends that the law relating to workers' compensation be amended so as to allow of the reopening of such cases as the present one, where it is shown to the Court that the compensation paid is inadequate and circumstances have arisen justifying the payment of additional compensation. 25th October, 1935.
No. 160. —Petition of Maud E. Farr, of Christchurch. Praying that she be granted a full discharge as sane. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration; and the Committee recommends that the Government instruct the Mental Hospitals Department to make further investigation with regard to giving the petitioner a full discharge at the earliest possible date. 25th October, 1935, >

No. 167.—Petition of W. Diack, of Glenham. Praying for relief on account of loss allegedly sustained through being deprived of railway communication. I am directed to report that as the subject-matter of the petition is relative to the land of the petitioner it is the opinion of the Committee that the petition should be referred to the Lands Committee. E. F. Healy, Chairman. 25th October, 1935.
Special Report. The Committee desires to record its appreciation of the tact and consideration shown to members and petitioners by its Chairman, Mr. E. F. Healy, and of the capable and impartial manner in which he has presided over its deliberations during the session; the Committee further desires that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House. A. S. Richards, Member of the Committee. 25th October, 1935. Special Report. The Committee desires to express its approval of the work done during the session by the Clerk, Mr. R. L. Cross, whose capable and efficient service is much appreciated by the Committee; and the Committee further desires that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House. 25th October, 1935.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee, consisting of ten members, held six meetings during the session; the average attendance at each meeting was six.
