DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION (ANNUAL REPORT OF).

Sir, — Department of Immigration, 29th June, 1935. Herewith I have the honour to submit the annual report on the immigration which has taken place into New Zealand from the United Kingdom during the year 1934-1935. I have, &c., Henky E. Moston, Acting Permanent Head. The Hon. the Minister of Immigration, Wellington. REPORT. The total number of arrivals from the United Kingdom during the year ended 31st March, 1935, was 491 (226 males and 265 females). Out of this total, only one (a boy of sixteen, whose parents were already settled in New Zealand) was assisted by the Imperial and New Zealand Governments. The activities of the Department have been in the direction of recovery of debts due in respect of passagemoney loans of previous years, an amount of £932 16s. Id. being still due to the New Zealand Government in this connection. Refunds due by migrants on account of non-fulfilment of the five years' residence condition also received attention. The effect of the Government's policy of restriction in respect of assisted migration, which was first adopted in May, 1927, is illustrated by the figures hereunder, embracing the financial years 1926-1927 to 1934-1935 inclusive :—
