ORDERS OP REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 2nd Day oe August, 1929. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to examine and report upon questions relating to railways; with power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum: the Committee to consist of the Right Hon. Mr. Coates, Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Hogan, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Munns, Mr. Nash, Mr. Semple, Mr. Smith, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Taverner.) Thursday, the 15th Day or August, 1929. REPORTS. No. 240/1928. —Petition of S. A. Ferguson and 18 Others, of Koraha. Praying that a railway-siding be constructed at Koraha. I am directed to report that, as the matter has already been dealt with, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 11th September, 1929.
No. 277/1928. —Petition of G. Baildon and Others, of Auckland. Praying that no further reclamation for railway purposes at Hobson Bay, Auckland, be allowed. I am directed to report that the subject-matter of this petition is under consideration of the Government, and the Committee has no recommendation to make. 11th September, 1929.
No. 56.—Petition of A. Hedley and 28 Others, of Tapuhi. Praying for the elimination of a dangerous crossing on the railway at Hukerenui. I am directed to report that, as this petition involves a question of policy, this Committee has no recommendation to make. 11th September, 1929.
No. 101. —Petition of P. N. Carroll, of 58 St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of injuries sustained while in the service of the New Zealand Railways. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The Committee desires also to suggest that the Railways Department find employment for the petitioner. 2nd October, 1929.
No. 139. —Petition of Mary Lowden, of 75 Burke Street, Christchurch. Praying for a compassionate allowance for services rendered by her late husband as a Railway Workshops Manager. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 2nd October, 1929.
No. 226.—Petition of Maby Haig Keeble, of 21 Victoria Street, Timaru. Praying for a compassionate allowance owing to her being in straitened circumstances. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should lie referred to the Government for consideration. 2nd October, 1929.
No. 217. —Petition of Hugh Bradley, of Ohakune. Praying for compensation for alleged injury received when employed by the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 29th October, 1929.
No. 301.—Petition of Madeleine L. Seller, of Upper Hutt. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of the accidental death of her husband whilst employed by the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 29th October, 1929.
No. 363.—Petition of C. 0. Bayley, of Apata Soldier Settlement, Tauranga. Praying for compensation for loss of water-supply caused by construction of East Coast Main Trunk Railway. I am directed to report that in tlie opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Lands Committee. 7th November, 1929.

No. 364. —Petition of R. H. W. Hanson, of 305 New North Road, Kingsland, Auckland. Praying for compassionate allowance in respect of injuries received while an employee of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a recommendation that the petitioner receive the sum of 15s. per week for a period of two years. 7th November, 1929.
No. 61. —Petition of H. McCabe, of Okato. Praying for further compensation for injuries resulting from an accident at Mataroa in 1918. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 7th November, 1929.
No. 41.—Petition of E. Tangney, of Timaru. Praying for compensation or a pension owing to incapacity through injury received while a Railway servant. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 7th November, 1929.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Railways Committee desire to express their appreciation of the ability and courtesy displayed during the session by Mr. J. T. Hogan, as Chairman, in the conduct of the business of the Committee ; and, further, that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. W. J. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Railways Committee desire to express their appreciation of the capable and efficient manner in which their Committee Clerk, Mr. H. K. Hawken, has during this session carried out his duties ; and, further, that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. 7th November, 1929.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Railways Committee, consisting of ten members, has during the session held six meetings, with an average attendance at each meeting of six members.
