ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 2nd 'Day of August, 1929. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to whom shall be referred all matters relating to labour ; with power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Clinkard, Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Linklater, Mr. Lysnar, Mr. McKeert, Mr. Munns, Mr. Smith, and the Hon. Mr. Veitch."—(Hon. Mr. Taverner, for the Hon. Mr. Veitch.) Thursday, the 15th Day oe August, 1929. Ordered, "That all petitions not finally dealt with during the sessions of 1928 be again referred to the same Committees that they were referred to during the said sessions."—(Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward.) Wednesday, the 28th Day of August, 1929. Ordered, " That the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill (No. 2) and the Apprentices Amendment Bill be referred to the Labour Bilis Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Veitch.) Wednesday, the Uth Day of September, 1929. Ordered, " That the Unemployed Workers Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Wilford.) Ordered, " That the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee."—(Mr. McKeen.) Wednesday, the 18th Day of September, 1929. REPORTS. Apprentices Amendment Bill. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee has carefully considered the above Bill, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed, with amendment as shown on the copy of the Bill annexed hereto. sth September, 1929.

Unemployed Workers Bill. I am directed to report that the Labour Bills Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has considered the same, and the Committee, while realizing that the Bill in its present form cannot proceed, desires to recommend that in its opinion the Government should take action this session to deal with unemployment insurance. 19th September, 1929.

Workers' Compensation Amendment Bill. I have the honour to report that, in consequence of the official statement to the effect that the whole position of the Workers' Compensation Act is to be investigated during the recess with a view to introducing legislation next session, the Committee decided not to take evidence on the matter, and under all the present circumstances recommends that the Bill be not allowed to proceed in the meantime, and that consideration be deferred. 7th October, 1929.

Shops and Offices Amendment Bill (No. 2). I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the above Bill, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed without amendment. 7th October, 1929.

I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter of this petition was carefully considered in conjunction with consideration of the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, upon which the Committee is reporting, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th October, 1929.

No. 371/28. —Petition of E. C. Sorrell and 101 Others. Praying for amendment of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, relating to closing-hours for selling flower-seeds, garden-seeds, bedding-out plants, and tomato-plants. I have the honour to report that the members of the Labour Bills Committee desire to record their sincere appreciation of the ability and unfailing impartiality exhibited during the session by its Chairman, Mr. S. G. Smith, in the conduct of the business of the Committee ; and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be reported to the House. Robert McKeen, Bth November, 1929. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Labour Bills Committee desire to record their cordial appreciation of the able and assiduous manner in which the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. Llewellyn Meredith, has during the session performed the duties of his office. They further desire that this resolution be entered on the minutes and reported to the House. 7th November, 1929.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee, consisting of ten members, has during the session held seven meetings, with an average attendance at each meeting of eight members. Five Bills and two petitions were referred to the Committee, all of which have been reported upon to the House. 7th November, 1929. Sydney G. Smith, Chairman.
