PREMISES RENTED AND BUILDINGS ERECTED IN WELLINGTON BY GOVERNMENT FOR BRANCHES OF PUBLIC SERVICE (PARTICULARS REGARDING COST, TERMS, ETC., OF).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 7th August, 1929. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing —(1) The cost per annum for the rental of each of the separate buildings for housing various branches of the Public Service in the City of Wellington ; and (2) the tenure of each of the leasehold properties on which a public building has been erected, the cost of such building, and when it was erected."—(Colonel McDonald.)

(2) Government premises on leased land in Wellington are — Public Works Store, Cornwall Street. Building purchased for £21,271, and lease taken over on 13th September, 1926. Lease from Wellington Harbour Board, twenty-one years from 28th May, 1917. Rent, £421 per annum. Police Building, Johnston Street. Building cost £44,860. Land leased from Wellington City Council, twenty-one years from Ist January, 1928, with right of renewal. Rent, £1,820 10s. per annum. State Coal Building, Herd Street. Building cost £6,956. Land leased from Wellington Harbour Board, twenty-one years from Ist April, 1926. Rent, £486 per annum. (Note. —As a matter of policy the freehold of these sites was not taken. These are Wellington City and Harbour Board endowments, and the proposal to deplete their income met with strenuous oppposition from both bodies.) Public Works Department, Wellington, N.Z., 7th August, 1929.
