ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 14th Day oe July, 1927. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to examine and report upon questions relating to railways; with power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. J. S. Dickson, Mr. Glenn, Mr. Howard, Mr. Kyle, Mr. H. G. R. Mason, Mr. Nash, Mr. J. C. Rolleston, Mr. Sidey, Mr. Veitch, and the mover."—(Right Hon. Mr. Coates.) REPORTS. No. 17.—Petition of Mary Haig Keeble, of Wellington. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's service in the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 15th September, 1927.

No. 22.—Petition of James George Cameron Walters, of Auckland. Praying for light employment or relief on account of injury whilst in the employ of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 15th September, 1927.

No. 46. —Petition of Percy James Auger, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance owing to alleged injury received whilst employed by the Railway Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 15th September, 1927.

No. 109.—Petition of James Wilson, of Whangarei. Praying for inquiry into the control of the Whangarei Railway bookstall, and the right to sell certain articles. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 15th September, 1927.

No. 186. —Petition of New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute (Incorporated), of Wellington. Praying that Charles Lewis Blackburn be raised on the Classification List of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 15th September, 1927.

No. 140.—Petition of C. E. Davis and 530 Others, of Kumeu. Praying that a survey be undertaken of the proposed Morningside to Kumeu railway-deviation. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th September, 1927.

No. 226. —Petition of Herbert Rudolph Stowell, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance owing to injuries received in a shunting accident. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 27th September, 1927.

No. 233. —Petition of William Hodge, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for loss while an employee in the Railway Department, and that the Police Department be instructed to facilitate the granting of a second-hand license to him. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 27th September, 1927.

No. 31.—Petition of Annie Miller and Another, of Paeroa. Praying for relief owing to nuisance caused by railway-yards being adjacent to their property. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th October, 1927.

No. 236. —Petition of James Hay, of Heathcote Valley. Praying for a compassionate allowance owing to inability to work through an accident sustained while an employee of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th October, 1927.

Government Railways AjFendment Bill. I am directed to report that the Committee has carefully considered the above Bill, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed, with the amendments shown on the copy of the Bill annexed hereto. 23rd November, 1927.

No. 314. —Petition of Harry McCabe, of Whangamomona. Praying for compensation for injuries received in a railway accident. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 29th November, 1927.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Railways Committee desires to record its great appreciation of the tact and ability with which the Chairman, Mr. J. S. Dickson, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session. It further desires that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and reported to the House. 29th November, 1927. J. A. Nash, Member of the Committee. *

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Railways Committee desires to record its great appreciation of the ability and courtesy with which the Clerk, Mr. Dobbie, has carried out his various duties during the session. It also desires that this resolution shall be entered in the minutes of the Committee and reported to the House. 29th November, 1927.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Railways Committee, consisting of ten members, has held eight meetings during the session, and the average attendance at these meetings has been seven. The Government Railways Amendment Bill and eleven petitions were referred to the Committee, and all of these were considered and reported upon. 29th November, 1927. J. S. Dickson, Chairman.
