ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 17th Day of July, 1924. Ordered, " That Standing Order No. 219 be suspended, and that a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of fourteen members, to consider all matters relating to school-teachers, education, and public instruction generally, public-school training of teachers, higher education, technical education, manual instruction, and such other matters affecting education as may be referred to it; to have power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Atmore, Mr. Bitchenor, Mr. Eraser, Mr. Hudson, Mr. Masters, Mr. Nash, Mr. Poland, Mr. Potter, Mr. J. C. Rolleston, Mr. Sidey, Mr. Wright, Mr. Young, and the mover." —(Hon. Mr. Park.) Tuesday, the 14th Day oe October, 1924. Ordered, " That the Education Amendment Bill be referred to the Education Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Parr.) Wednesday, the 22nd Day oe October, 1924. Ordered, " That the petition of Catherine Helen Finlayson and others be referred direct to the Education Committee."—(Mr. Eraser.) Tuesday, the 28th Day oe October, 1924. Ordered, " That the petition of Elsie Andrews be referred direct to the Education Committee."—(Mr. Wright.)

EBPOKTB. Special Report. I am directed to report that at a meeting of the Education Committee held this morning the following resolution was unanimously adopted : — That the Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the late Hon. Sir Walter Clark Buchanan to tho cause of education generally in this Dominion, both whilst a member of the Education Committee and at all other times. 20th August, 1924.

No. 141.—Petition of Catherine Gray, of Masterton. Praying that she be allowed to benefit under the Teachers' Superannuation Fund as medically unfitI am directed to report that, th-3 member in charge of this petition having expressed his desire to withdraw the same, the Committee recommends that leave be given to withdraw the petition accordingly. 17th September, 1924.

No. 258, Petition of George Whitelaw and 8 Others ; and No. 259, Petition of William Melville Yates and 8 Others. Praying for an amendment to the Teachers' Superannuation Act to enable them to come under the provisions of the 1910 Act. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee these petitions should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 17th September, 1924.

Education Amendment Bill. I AM directed to report that the Education Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that it has carefully considered the same, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed, with the amendments as shown on the copy of the Bill attached hereto. 16th October, 1924,

No. 177. —Petition of Walter Kerr, of Auckland. Praying that he may be granted an increase in his superannuation allowance. 1 am directed to report that, in view of the Government having taken action in the matter, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th November, 1924.

No. 290. —Petition of E. Florence Ainsworth and 6 Others. Praying for an amendment to the Teachers' Superannuation Act to enable them to come under the provisions of the 1910 Act. 1 am directed to report that, in view of the Government having taken action in the matter, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th November, 1924.

No. 401. —Petition of Catherine Helen Finlayson and 808 Others. Praying for repeal of the Education Department's regulations (Ist February, 1924) introducing sex differentiation in salaries in the same grade of position, and asking that the 1923 scale be reverted to in the meantime. I am directed to report that the Committee believes that reversion from the new scheme to the old scheme as requested by Catherine Helen Finlayson and 808 others would not be in the interest of the women teachers, and has therefore no recommendation to make. 6th November, 1924,

No. 409.- Petition of Elsie Andrews and Others. Praying for reconsideration of the sex differentiation of salaries of women teachers. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th November, 1924.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the Education Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the manner in which the Chairman (Mr. Hudson) has presided over its deliberations. P. Fraser, 6th November, 1924. Member of the Committee.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the services rendered by the Clerk (Mr. J. C. J. Chadwick). 6th November, 1924.

Final Report. I am directed to report that the Education Committee held four meetings during the session, the average attendance being eleven members at each meeting. The Education Amendment Bill was referred to the Committee, and has been duly considered and reported upon. Seven petitions were referred to the Committee, all of which have been duly considered and reported upon. 6th November, 1924.
