In addition to the amount collected by societies as shown in the summary, there have been large sums sent in to the Government from private donors and from the result of special collections, so that the actual cash collections recorded to the end of 1915 were as follows :— £ Collected by societies ... ... ... ... ... 1,586,249 Received by the Department of Internal Affairs for transmission abroad, hospital ships, New Zealand sick and wounded, and other special purposes (over and above amounts forwarded by Patriotic Societies) ... ... . ... ... 43,590 Donated at the outbreak of the war to the New Zealand Government towards war expenses and special objects ... ... 159,137 Paid into the National War Funds Council ... ... ... 6,403 £1,795,379 Estimated moneys in hands of collectors, newspaper funds, unreported balances in hands of societies in transit, ko. ... ... 50,000 Total amount of moneys collected... ... ... 1,845,379 Value of contributions of goods, stock, produce, &c, of which the Department of Internal Affairs had been notified ... .... 108,946 Total of actual and estimated contribution ... ... til ,954,325 Since the date to which the foregoing figures have been made up there have been many special appeals by way of carnivals, art unions, and other functions to which the people have responded with undiminished liberality. The regular collection of funds is still being maintained by the various societies, and from the information obtained in respect of these activities it may be safely estimated that the patriotic contributions of the people of New Zealand, in cash and goods, have now amounted to over two millions pounds sterling. As will be observed from the summary, the funds remaining in hand at the 31st December amounted to, in round figures, .6981,000, to which should be added, say, £50,000 to £60,000 in transit, giving a total of over one million pounds available for relief and general purposes at that date. And if to this amount is added the amount contributed since Decemoer, it may be fairly assumed that the unexpended funds at the present date are approximately one and a quarter million. ,T. Hislop, 26th July, 1916. Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs Department.
