SEDDONVILLE STATE COAL-MINE (LOSSES IN CONNECTION WITH THE).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 10th July, 1914. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the amount (if any) lost by the State on the purohase and sale of the Seddonville State Coal-mine, and the amount (if any) lost on the working of the mine."— (Mr. Peabck.)
Seddonville State Coal-mine : Return showing (1) the Amount lost by the State on the Purchase and Sale of the Mine, and (2) the Amount lost on Working the Same. 1. The mine was not purchased by the State at all. It was takea over by the Government from the Westport Cardiff Coal Company, as the terms of the lease had not been complied with. No payment was made to the company, but the plant was taken over as a set-off against the amounts owing by the lessees. A petition was subsequently presented to Parliament on behalf of the lessees, praying for compensation, and an amount of £1,000 was paid. 2. The estimated total loss on the working of the mine is £40,680 13s. sd. H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secretary. Mines Department, Wellington, 29th July, 1914.
