DEFENCE DEPARTMENT: RETURN RELATIVE TO OFFICERS SENT TO ENGLAND.

Return, to an Order of the House of Representatives dated, the 2nd August, 1912. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the names of officers sent to England by the Defence Department, amounts received by each for salary and travelling-expenses each year, and the purpose for which they were sent." —(Mr. Okey.)

Notes to Schedule above. * No other allowances are given, and all travelling-expenses and hire of lodgings, camp furniture when at schools of instruction and manoeuvres, have to be paid out of this. (a.) The Imperial Government pays Colonel Robin's travelling allowances and expenses when detailed for duty by the Chief of the General Staff, War Office. When paid by Imperial Government Colonel Robin will not draw travelling-allowances from New Zealand Government. (6.) Colonel Davies is paid solely by the Imperial Government. (c.) The following officers are paid by the New Zealand Government in the first instance, but the Imperial Government refunds to the New Zealand Government the amount of the regimental pay of each at the rate of 6s. 6d. per "diem : (1) Lieut. W. McG. Turnbull: (2) Lieut, A. H. Burn ; (3) Lieut. M. L. Garland; (4) Lieut. I. T. Standish : (5) Lieut. W. W. A. Burn ; (6) Lieut. A. H. Piper ; (7) Lieut. J. L. H. Turner ; (8) Lieut. H. A.
