Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing, for eaoh land district of tha colony—(1) The number o[ applications by settlers, holders of lands under the lease-iu-perpetuity system, for loans under the Advances to S auler.-t Act arid which have been rejected by the Department; and staring (2) the reasons assigned for patting settlers, when applying for loans to the Department, to the expense of paying for a special valuation after tae lands are valued by departmental officers."—(Mr. Jennings.)

(1.) The reasons assigned for putting settlers, when applying for loans to the Department, to the expense of paying for a special valuation after the lan Is are valued by departmental officers :— The Government Advances to Settlers Act provides for the payment in any event of a valuation fee with every application for an advance, and it is immaterial whether or not a special valuation of the proposed security is made. A special or up-to-date valuation is necessary in almost all cases where the advancing of money is concerned, but, whether or not that valuation is obtained, the applicant is not affected either by the saving of the fee or the expense entailed by an inspection. Government Advances to Settlers Office, John McGowan, Wellington, 12th September, 1904. Superintendent.
