1898. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND. [In continuation of E.-5, Sess. II., 1897.]

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

Annual Ebpobt of the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of the University Act, the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings .of the University since the date of the last report:—■ The Senate met at Dunedin, pursuant to the provisions of the University Act, in annual session, on the 21st February, 1898, and at that session made certain amendments to the University statutes. These amendments have been approved by His Excellency. The usual examinations were held in November and December, 1897, and in January and April, 1898, in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Music, and for admission to the legal profession. The total number of candidates at all these examinations was 1,151. The Senate also held a special session in April, 1898. Owing to the loss of the answers of the November examination candidates to the papers set by the English examiners, through the wrecking of the s.s. " Mataura," a special examination of 1898 was required, and provided for by statute. It was duly held in the month of April, and dealt with those candidates whose papers were lost and who elected to be re-examined. Candidates for the higher degrees and for honours were not examined, neither were those who elected to defer their examinations till November, 1898. At the annual and special sessions the Senate conferred the following degrees after examination : The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 48 candidates ; the ordinary degree of Bachelor of Science on 4 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 4 candidates; the degree of Bachelor, of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery on 5 candidates ; the degree of Master of Arts on 5 candidates. In addition, 9 gained Senior Scholarships; 1 gained the John Tinline Scholarship; 1 gained the Bowen Prize; 110 passed sections of examination for various degrees, exclusive of the abovementioned graduates; 67 passed various examinations for admission to the legal profession; 14 gained Junior Scholarships; 30 gained "credit" at the Junior Scholarship examination; 329 passed the Matriculation examination ; 27 passed the Medical Preliminary examination ; 1 gained " certificate of proficiency." The number of graduates of the University admitted after examination is now as follows : Bachelor of Arts (alone), 322; Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, 8; Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, 20 ; Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, 6; Bachelor of Science (alone), 10; Bachelor of Science in Engineering (alone), 3; Bachelor of Laws (alone), 14; Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 23; Master of Arts (alone), 163; Master of Arts and Bachelor of Science, 17; Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, 13 ; Master of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, 2 ; Master of Arts and Doctor of Science, 2; Master of Arts and Doctor of Laws, 2; Doctor of Laws (alone), 2; Doctor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, 1; Doctor of Medicine (alone), 4; Doctor of Science (alone), 1: total, 613. The accounts for the University for the year 1897, duly audited, are appended to this report. Jambs Hectob, Chancellor. Dunedin, 29th April, 1898.
