EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND. [In continuation of E.-5, 1896.]
Presented to both Houses of th» General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
Annual Beport op the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of the University Act, the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report: — . ' . The Senate met at Auckland, pursuant to the provisions of the University Act, in annual session on 24th February, 1897, and at that session made certain amendments to the University statutes. These amendments have been approved by His Excellency. The Senate also held a special session in May, 1897. The usual examinations were held in November and December, 1896, and m January and April, 1897, in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Music, and for admission to the legal profession. The total number of candidates at all these examinations was 1,149. ' At the annual and special sessions the Senate conferred the following degrees after examination • The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 33 candidates; the ordinary degree of Bachelor of Science on 7 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering on 1 candidate; the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 10 candidates ; the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery on 2 candidates; the degree of Master of Arts on 15 candidates ; the degree of Doctor of Science on 1 candidate ; the degree of Doctor of Laws on 1 candidate. In addition, 17 gained Honours in Arts ; 8 gained Senior Scholarships; 1 gamed the John Tinline Scholarship; 1 gained the Bo wen Prize; 119 passed sections of examinations for various degrees exclusive of the above-mentioned graduates ; 48 passed various examinations for admission to the legal profession ; 5 passed the examinations qualifying for Class C under the Education Department; 17 gained Junior Scholarships; 23 gained "credit" at the Junior Scholarship examination; 404 passed the Matriculation examination; 31 passed the Medical Preliminary examination ; 3 gained "certificates of proficiency." The number of graduates of the University admitted after examination is now as tollows : Bachelors of Arts (alone), 274; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 8; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 18 ; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 4 ; Bachelors of Science (alone). 8; Bachelors of Science in Engineering (alone), 2 ; Bachelors of Laws (alone), 13; Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 20; Masters of Arts (alone), 158; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 17; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 13 ; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 2 ; Masters of Arts and Doctors of Science, 2 ; Masters ot Arts and Doctors of Laws, 2; Doctors of Laws (alone), 2 ; Doctor of Laws and Bachelor ot Arts, 1; Doctors of Medicine (alone), 4 ; Doctor of Science (alone), 1 : total, 549.
