1896. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. [In continuation of E.-8, 1895.]

■ Presented in pursuance of Section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act. 1888."

The Chairman, University College, Auckland, to the Hon. the Minister of Education. Sir, — University College, Auckland, 15th June, 1896. In pursuance of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882," I have the honour to forward the following report for the year 1895 : — 1. The three members of the College Council who retired by effluxion of time on the 21st of JVlay, the anniversary of the opening of the College, were the following: Eobert Hall, Esq., ■appointed by His Excellency the Governor in Council; Mr. Jackson Palmer, elected by the constituent members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland ; and Miss Lilian Edger, M.A., elected by the graduates of the University of New Zealand on the books of the College. Mr. Eobert Hall was reappointed by His Excellency the Governor in Council; Mr. Jackson Palmer was re-elected; and Mr. Charles Thomas Major, M.A., B.Sc, was elected graduates' member. Mr. Major resigned his seat on the 2nd of September, and Mr. James Scott Maclaurin, B.Sc, was duly elected to fill his place. 2. The teaching staff consists now of five Professors and two Lecturers—viz., Professors (1) of Classics, (2) of English, (3) of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, (4) of Chemistry and Experimental Physics, (5) of Biology and Geology; and Lecturers (1) on Music, and (2) on French. 3. In 1895 the number of students who attended lectures was 209, of whom 110 were males and 99 were females. Of this number, 7 were graduates, of whom 5 were males and 2 were females. The number of undergraduates was 50, of whom 31 were males and 19 were females. Of non-matriculated students there were 152, of whom 74 were males and 78 were females. There has thus been a very large increase in the number of non-matriculated students, the number for 1894 being 87, and for 1895 152, thus showing an increase of 65. There were also 20 students examined who were exempted from attendance at lectures. 4. A popular course of six lectures on Greek Art was delivered by Professor Tubbs, and a popular course of three lectures on the Geology of Gold Deposits was delivered by Professor Thomas. These lectures attracted considerable audiences, and gave much satisfaction. 5. The audited statement of accounts is transmitted herewith. I have, &c, " G. Maurice O'Eorke, M.A., LL.D., Chairman.
