EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND. [In continuation of E.-5, 1895.]

The Chancellor of the Univeksity to His Excellency the Governor. My Lord, — • University of New Zealand, Wellington, 30th May, 1896. I have the honour to transmit herewith to your Excellency the annual report of the Senate of the University, as adopted at the meeting of that body on the 23rd April, 1896, in accordance with the provisions of clause 28 of the University Act, 1874. I have, &c, James Hector, Chancellor His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow, Governor of New Zealand.
Annual Ebpokt of the Senate, 1896. In compliance with the 28fch clause of the University Act, the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report: — The Senate met at Wellington, pursuant to the provisions of the University, in annual session, on the 26th February, 1896, and at that session made certain amendments to the University statutes. These amendments have been approved by His Excellency. The usual examinations were held in November and December, 1895, and in January and April, 1896, in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Music, and for admission to the legal profession. The total number of candidates for all these examinations was 1,071. The Senate held a special session in April, 1896, to consider the reports of the University Examiners in England. At the annual and special sessions the Senate conferred the following degrees after examination : The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 33 candidates; the degree of Ordinary Bachelor of Science on 4 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering on 1 candidate; the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 6 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery on 3 candidates ; the degree of Master of Arts on 15 candidates; the degree of Doctor of Science on 1 candidate. In addition, 22 candidates gained Honours in Arts ; 8 gained Senior Scholarships ; 1 gained the John Tinline Scholarship; 1 gained the Bowen Prize ; 1 was nominated for the Exhibition 1851 Science Scholarship; 1 was nominated for a commission in the Imperial Army ; 98 passed sections of examination for various degrees; 36 passed various examinations for admission to the legal profession ; 3 passed the examination qualifying for the Teachers' Class C ; 16 gained Junior Scholarships ; 35 gained " credit" at the Junior Scholarship examination ; 360 passed the Matriculation examination ; 38 passed the Medical Preliminary examination ; 3 gained " certificates of proficiency." The number of graduates of the University after examination is now as follows : Bachelors of Arts (alone), 258 ; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 6 ; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 13; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 3; Ordinary Bachelors of Science (alone), 6; Bachelor of Science in Engineering, 1; Bachelors of Laws (alone), 10; Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 19; Masters of Arts (alone), 150; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 16; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 11; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 2 ; Masters of Arts and Doctors of Science, 2; Master of Arts and Doctor of Laws, 1 ; Doctors of Laws (alone), 2 ; Doctor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, 1; Doctors of Medicine (alone), 4 : total, 505.
