MIDLAND RAILWAY LANDS (DETAILS OF CROWN LANDS DISPOSED OF BY THE MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated Friday, the 14th day of August, 1896. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing the acreage of Crown land disposed of by the Midland Railway Company under terms of their contract with the Government —(1) How much of that area was situated in the Province of Canterbury ; (2) how much of the area was situated in the County of Ashley; and how much land was sold by them classed as reserves for the various purposes and not included in the plan or map they had to select from ? " —(Mr. Buddo.)

None of the above lands were classed as reserves. The Midland Eailway Company has, however, in addition to the above, sold the following lands which are not shown in the Midland Eailway contract, and for which Government will not grant titles—viz.: 663 acres and 18 perches in the County of Ashley; 305 acres 3 roods 2 perches in the County of Selwyn : total, 968 acres 3 roods 20 perches.
