1895. NEW ZEALAND.
THE CENSUS, 1896 (MEMORANDUM FROM THE REGISTRAR-GENERAL TO THE HON. THE PREMIER RELATIVE TO)
Laid on the Table by Leave of the House.
Hon. the Premier. Time has been lost owing to the suspension of the work of preparing maps for Census Enumerators and in selecting the Enumerators. So that it seems to me quite impossible to take a census earlier than the sth April next (if this be desired). But I have seen the Surveyor-General, and we believe it possible even now to get everything ready to take a census on the same night as before. Much depends on the Survey Department in regard to the time taken in mapping, and, by special arrangements, I understand, a saving of time could be effected there. Making the night the sth April, I might be ready for Commissioners at end of September, as in 1891. 29th October, 1895. E. J. yon Dadelszen.
