The Undee-Seceetaey for Justice to Mr. E. C. Lattee, Christchurch. Sic, — Department of Justice, Wellington, New Zealand, 29th August, 1893. I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the number and date quoted in the margin (Ist and 26th inst.), with reference to the amount contributed by the Government towards the costs incurred by you in connection with the Ell Commission. In reply, I am directed by the Minister of Justice to inform you that he is unable to increase the amount of the contribution towards the law costs; but he has given directions that your claim for attending before the Commission, amounting to £14 145., shall be paid. I have therefore passed a voucher for the amount, and a cheque will reach you in due course. I have, &c, C. J. A. Haselden, E. C. Latter, Esq., Christchurch. Under-Secretary.
