LABOUR DEPARTMENT (RETURN SHOWING PARTICULARS OF CERTAIN WORK DONE BY).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 35th August, 1893. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The number of those included in the 2,518 persons reported by the Department of Labour as sent to private employment, but for whom no positive engagement was really made; the nature of the engagement made on behalf of these persons, or the conditions under which they were sent which entitled the department to report that they had been sent to private employment; (2) the number of persons assisted in each of the years ending the 31st March, 1892 and 1893, by an advance of fare or other expenses on going up country in search of employment, and the average amount of such advance ; and (3) the number of registered factories and hands employed thereat in each of the above years; the return to show the new factories commencing work during the latter year distinguished from factories working but which had not been registered in the previous year; also in both cases the number of persons employed."—(Mr. Duthie.)
Numbbe of those included in the 2,518 Persons for whom No Positive Engagements were made : 750. These persons were sent into the country without any positive engagements being made on their behalf. Beason. —Agents report monthly on state of labour in their respective districts. These persons were sent in consequence of such reports being of a nature to warrant the department in sending them. Subsequent reports from said Agents show that they were satisfactorily placed in employment.
(2.) Numbee of Persons assisted (Tear ending March, 1892) : 1,000. These persons went into the country in search of employment, and were assisted to the amount of £750 : average amount, 15s. each. Numbbe of Persons assisted (Year ending March, 1893) : 750. These persons also went into the country in search of employment, and were assisted by passages to the amount of £625 : average amount, 16s. Bd. each. N.B.—Two-thirds of the above amounts were expended on Government railways.
