1893. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. [In Continuation of E.-8, 1892.]

Presented in pursuance of Section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882."

The Eegistbab to the Hon. the Minister of Education. Sib,— University College, Auckland, 29th April, 1893. I have the honour to forward the following report for the year 1892 : — 1. The three members of the College Council who retired by reason of effluxion of time on the 21st of May were the following: Mr. James Dilworth, appointed by His Excellency the Governor in Council; Dr. Joseph Giles, E.M., elected by the constituent graduates; and Mr. John H. Upton, elected by the constituent members of the General Assembly. Mr. Dilworth was reappointed; Miss Margaret Lilian Florence Edger, M.A., of the University of New Zealand, was elected by the graduates; and Mr. Jackson Palmer, M.H.E., was elected by the members of the General Assembly. In April, 1892, Mr. Samuel Luke was again elected to be Chairman of the Auckland Board of Education, in succession to Mr. Udy, and thereby became ex officio a member of this Council. Sir George Maurice O'Eorke, 8.A., and the Hon. Colonel Theodore Minet Haultain were respectively re-elected to be Chairman and Vice-chairman of the Council. 2. The teaching-staff consists of the following : Four Professors—viz. (1) of Classics and English, (2) of Mathematics, (3) of Experimental Physics and Chemistry, (4) of Biology and Geology ; and a Lecturer on Music. 3. In the year 1892 the degree of M.A. was awarded by the Senate of the University of New Zealand to two gentlemen who were students of this College, with honours of the first-class in Chemistry and Mathematics respectively. The degree of B.A. was awarded to seven students— viz., four male and three female. Two of these—one male and one female —gained University Senior Scholarships in mathematics and political science respectively. The degree of B.Sc. was awarded to one student (male). 4. The persons who attended term lectures in 1892 were 144—viz., fifty-seven male and eighty-seven female. Of these, the graduates were seven—viz., four male and three female; undergraduates, fifty-seven—viz., forty-one male and sixteen female; and non-matriculated students, eighty —viz., thirty-nine male and forty-one female. 5. Occassional lectures of a more popular character on scientific subjects have been delivered, and have been numerously attended. 6.
