EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND [In Continuation of E.-5, 1892.]
Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
The Chancellor of the University to His Excellency the Govebnor. My Lord,— University of New Zealand, Wellington, sth May, 1893. I have the honour, in accordance with the provisions of "The New Zealand University Act, 1874," to forward to your Excellency the report of the Senate for the past year, as agreed to at a special session of Senate held on the 26th April, 1893. I have, &c, His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand. James Hectok, Chancellor.
Annual Beport.op the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of " The University Act, 1874," the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report. The Senate met at Auckland in annual session on the 22nd February, 1893. At that session the Senate made certain amendments to the statutes formerly in force, and these amendments, being embodied in new statutes, have been submitted to and approved by His Excellency. The Court of Convocation of the University met for its tenth annual session at Dunedin on the 4th January, 1893, and C. Chilton, Esq., M.A., D.Sc, was at that session elected as Chairman of the Court for the next three years. A statement of the accounts of the University for the year 1892, audited in accordance with the law, is hereby submitted. The University has continued during the past twelve months the work intrusted to it, and has held examinations in November and December, 1892, in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Law, Medicine, and Music. The total number of candidates for all these examinations was 903, a large increase on that for 1891; and this total, when compared with the population, and taking into consideration the geographical conditions, of the colony, affords good evidence both of the spread of education in New Zealand and of the adaptation of the University to the needs of the people. The Senate has also held special sessions in December, 1892, and April, 1893, and at these sessions and at the annual session conferred the following degrees of the year: The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 35 candidates: the degree of Bachelor of Science on 4 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 4 candidates; the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery on 4 candidates; the degree of Master of Arts on 28 candidates; the degree of Doctor of Science on 1 candidate ; the degree of Doctor of Laws on 1 candidate. In addition, 28 candidates in 1892 gained Honours in Arts; 3 gained Honours in Science; 8 gained Senior Scholarships ; 1 gained the John Tinline Scholarship; 1 gained the Bowen Prize ; 12 gained Junior Scholarships; 98 passed sections of examination for various degrees; 26 passed with credit the Junior Scholarship examination; 330 qualified for matriculation ;32 passed various examinations qualifying for admission to the legal profession; and 3 passed an examination qualifying for a Teacher's Class C under the Education Department. Including those who gained degrees in 1892 the number of graduates of the University admitted after examination is now as follows: Bachelors of Arts (alone), 187; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 4; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 9; Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 3; Bachelors of Science (alone), 4; Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 14; Masters of Arts (alone), 126; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 8; Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 9 ; Master of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, 1; Master of Arts and Doctor of Science, 1; Master of Arts and Doctor of Laws, 1; Doctor of Laws (alone), 1; Doctor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, 1; Doctors of Medicine (alone), 4 : total, 373.
38.— 6.
The Senate has this year made complete provision for the details of a curriculum in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and has ordered by statute that students who successfully pass through the course in these branches shall be admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Science. The question of a similarly detailed course in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering has been unavoidably postponed until 1894; but after that year, as the Senate hopes, there will be ample provision within the colony for thorough instruction in the highest branches of technical education.
