1893. NEW ZEALAND.

RAILWAY EMPLOYES WHO HAVE CEASED TO BE CIVIL SERVANTS (RETURN RELATIVE TO).

Return to an Order of the Mouse of Representatives dated 28th June, 1893. Ordered, " That a return bo laid before this House showing by classes or grades those who, on the coming into operation of * The Government Eailways Act, 1887,' ceased to be ranked as members of the Civil Service."—(Mr. G. Hutchison.)

Please see replies given on behalf of the Government in previous years—namely, by Hon. Mr. Ballance, Hansard, page 478, 2nd July, 1891; and by Hon. Mr. Seddon, Hansard, page 502, 9th August, 1892. The Commissioners are unable to give a definite return on this basis. All persons on the railways who were Civil servants when the Government Eailways Act came into force then ceased to be Civil servants, and their privileges ceased. The class or grade in the railway service was-inter-departmental, and would not fix the operation of the Civil Service Act. . E. G. PILCHEK, Eailway Department, Secretary. Wellington, 17th July, 1893. Approximate Cost of Paper.— Preparation, nil; printing (1,1330 copies), 13s,

Authority: Samuel Costall, Government Printer, Wellington.—lB93.

Price 3d.]
