EDUCATION: THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. [In Continuation of E.-8, 1889.]

Presented in pursuance of Section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882."

In pursuance of section 25 of "The Auckland "University College Act, 1882," the Council of the College has the honour to make the following report :— 1 Being empowered so to do by " The Special Powers and Contracts Act, 1885," His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to authorise the transfer of the site lately occupied by the Survey and Crown Lands Departments at Auckland to the Auckland University College Council, as a site" for University College buildings. Those departments have recently vacated the offices situated on the site referred to, the transfer to the College Council has been made, and the necessary alterations in the buildings upon the site thus granted are now being effected. These arrangements will materially diminish the difficulties under which the work of the College has been hitherto performed. The lecture-rooms and laboratories of the Professors, which have been until the present located in three different streets, will now be concentrated into two buildings in proximity to each other ; and space will be gained for the College library. The lectures on music will continue to be given in the Choral Hall, and the classes of the Instructor in Drawing (School of Applied Science) must still meet in the building of the Auckland College and Grammar School. The area lately transferred to the Council of University College consists of 1 acre and 11 perches, being the ground between the Supreme Courthouse and the Beach Eoad. About one-half of the area is a very steep declivity. . 2 The College sustained, in the past year, the loss by death of an eminent adviser m the Council of which he had been a member from the first, and a munificent promoter of scientific education—Mr. Justice Gillies. For the founding of two scholarships in science Mr. Gillies, nearly five years ago, presented to the College Council the sum of £33,000. 3 Two gentlemen who had also been members of the Council from the institution of the College the Eev. David Bruce and Mr. H. G. Seth-Smith, have recently found it necessary to resign *'the former because of his having become resident at Sydney, and the latter because of his removal from. Auckland in consequence of being appointed to the office of Chief Judge of the Native Land Court. The members of the Council are now as follows : Mr. J. H. Upton is ex officio member in a twofold capacity, both as Mayor of the City of Auckland and as Chairman of the Auckland Board of Education. Elected by members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland: The Eight Eev. W. G. Cowie.D.D., Anglican Bishop of Auckland; Mr Edwin Hesketh ; and the Hon. Sir Frederick Whitaker, K.C.M.G., M.L.C. Appointed by the Governor in Council: Mr. James Dilworth (vice Mr. Justice Gillies), the Hon. Colonel T. M. Haultain and the Eev. Alexander Eeid. Appointed by the Governor in Council, pending the time when there shall be thirty graduates of the University of New Zealand having their names on the College books : Mr. Joseph Giles, Eesident Magistrate in Auckland (vice Mr. Bruce); the Hon. Sir G Maurice O'Eorke, 8.A., Speaker of the House of Eepresentatives ; the Hon. Daniel Pollen, M.L.C.Vice Mr* Setn Smith). Sir Maurice O'Eorke has been re-elected Chairman of the College Council, and Colonel Haultain Vice-chairman. , 4 The graduates of the University of New Zealand who have graduated from this College and retain their names on the College books are twenty. At the end of the present year the number was thirteen. The ad eundem graduates whose names are on the books are five. 5 The teaching staff is as follows. The Professors are : Classics and English—H. M. Posnett, Ma' LL.D., Dublin ; Senior Moderator in Classics, 1887 ; Wall Oriental Scholar. Mathematics 'yj' g Midi's MA. Cantab.; Senior Wrangler and First Smith's Prizeman, 1861. Chemistry and experimental physics—F. A Brown, Hon. M.A. Oxon.; B.Sc. London; F.C.S. Biology .and o-eoloay— A P. W. Thomas, M.A. Oxon.; late Scholar Balliol College; Burdett-Coutts University Scholar. * The Lecturer in Music is Carl Schmitt, Knight Commander Order Crown of Italy. The Instructor in Drawing (School of Applied Science) is J. G. Trevithick, N.A.

6. Instruction in elementary science, specially adapted to the requirements of the Education Department, and in agricultural science, has been given, by lectures and in the laboratories, to teachers employed by the Board of Education and to others. 7. The Auckland Amateur Opera Club has lately presented to the College Council the sum of 200 guinesas, to be expended, in the years 1890 and 1891, in the support of exhibitions in music, which are to be obtained by competitive examination, and to be conditional on due attendance at the lectures given in the School of Music by the Lecturer in Music and the Professor of Physical Science. 8. The persons who attended term lectures in 1889 were 113 —viz., sixty-two male and fiftyone female. Of these, six were graduates, four male and two female ; forty-eight undergraduates, thirty male and eighteen female; and the non-matriculated students were fifty-nine—viz., twentyeight male and thirty-one female. The undergraduates whose names are on the College books of the year, from attendance at lectures or examinations in the course of the past two years, are ninety-one—viz., sixty-three male and twenty-eight female. 9. Lectures of a more popular character on scientific subjects have been delivered, and have been numerously attended. 10. The degree of M.A. in the University of New Zealand, with honours of the second class, was awarded in 1889 to a student of this College, Mr. Sinclair Gillies, and the degree of B.A. to seven students, of whom three were male and four female. One of those, Mr. T. H. Green, Gillies; Scholar, has obtained a senior scholarship of the University. 11. A statement of the receipts and expenditure for the year 1889 is appended.
