CIVIL SERVANTS WHO HAVE BEEN RETIRED, REDUCED, OR TRANSFERRED, FROM 31st AUGUST, 1888, TO 1st JUNE, 1889.
Return to an Order of the House of Bepresentativcs, dated 4th July, 1889. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing separately the number of Civil servants ami persons in Government employ (1) who have been retired; (2) who have had their salaries reduced; (3) who have been transferred from one branch of the public service to another; showing the saving (if any) effected by such retirement, reduction, or transfer, and the provincial district in which such retirement, reduction, or transfer has been made, for the period extending from 31st August, 1888, to Ist Juno, 1889, with the amount of pension, compensation, or retiring-allowance paid to each; (4) the names of all such Civil servants or persons in Government employ who, having been paid compensation for loss of office, have been reinstated in the same or any branch of the public service, showing the office held before retirement and the salary attached thereto, the amount of compensation paid, the office to which reappointment or appointment has been made, and the salary attached thereto."—(Mr. Gor.DiE.)

Note.—Tho reduction of expenses and staff charges being due to many causes and operations which have extended over several years, the savings effected by particular staff changes cannot be identified. The railway working-expenses during 1887-88 were, in round numbers, £687,000 ; the same during 1888-89 were £647,000 ; the saving being, for twelve months, £40,000. All persons in the Eailway Service ceased to be in the Civil Service upon the initiation of the Government Bailways Act, 27th January, 1889.
