SAN FRANCISCO AND DIRECT MAIL STEAMERS. (RETURN SHOWING OUTWARD AND INWARD CARGO AND PASSENGERS, ETC.)
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 131 st June, 1889. Ordered, " That a return be laid before this House showing outward and inward cargo and passengers carried by the San Francisco mail steamers and by the direct mail steamers ; also the quantity and value of coal—the pro luce of New Zealand—supplied at the various pores in the colony to the aforesaid steamers, during the year ended the 31st December, 1888."—(Mr. Ross.)

Outward cargo : 23,664 tons weight—viz., 359,655 carcases of sheep and lambs (frozen), 727 packages of sundries (frozen), 18,896 pieces of beef (frozen), 18,892 legs of mutton (frozen), 367 pieces of mutton (frozen), 28,581 bales of wool, 1,222 bales of sheepskins, 1,189 bales of rabbitskins, 932 bales of leather and basils, 6,024 bales of hemp, 1,301 casks of tallow, 474 casks of pelts, 17,314 cases of meats, 9 bales of hair, 400 tons of antimony-ore, 50 tons of metal, 4,907 cases of kauri gum, 94C sacks of peas, 8,145 cases of cheese, 10,388 kegs of butter, 13,888 sacks of grain, 3,775 sacks of seed, 210 cases of shells, 1,966 sacks of potatoes, 19 cases of gold (valued at £95,000), and 1,512 packages of sundries. By the steamers of the Union Shipping Company, San Francisco Service :— Inward cargo : 1,892 tons general cargo; no details given. Outward cargo : 864 tons weight—viz., 8 bales of wool, 109 bales of sausage-skins, 603 casks of pelts, 91 tons of kauri gum, £100,000 in gold specie, £96,000 in bullion, and the remainder in general produce.
