Ordered, " That a return be laid before this House showing, under distinct headings, the respective amounts contributed by each provincial district to the colonial revenue from Customs, stamps, property-tax, beer-tax, and territorial revenue for each of the financial years ended the 31st March, 1887, 1888, and 1889."—(Mr. Ross.)

Note.—As the precise information twclored cannot be supplied, the following explanation is necessary:—Customs and beer-tax: There aro no means of ascertaining the amount contributed by each provincial district, which means tho amount of duty paid on goods consumed within the district. The return made is therefore that of the duty collected at the ports in each district. Stamps: There are great difficulties in the way of famishing an accurate return of the revenue contributed by each district from this source; the amounts stated are therefore only approximate. Property-tax: For the year ended 81st March, 1881, a return such as that now ordered was prepared with very groat labour, and then only with approximate results. That return has boon made the basis of all similar returns since prepared, the amount of the tax collected in any year being allocated to the several provincial districts in proportion to the amount approximately ascertained to have been contributed by each in 1881. Territorial revenue : The revenue collected in each land district only can be given.
