OPENING NEW ZEALAND PORTS FOR IMPORTATION OF LIVE STOCK (PAPERS RELATING TO).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 28th April, 1887. Ordered, " That there be laid upon the table a return of all correspondence which has taken place during the recess between the Government and Agricultural Associations and others, on the subject of opening New Zealand ports for the importation of live stock."—(Mr. O'Callaghan.)

No. 1. The Secretary, Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary. Sir,— Wellington, 6th April, 1887. I have the honour to forward to you the following resolution, passed at the annual general meeting of the members of this association held on the 24th March last: " Besolved, That Government be requested to remove the restrictions from the importation of cattle and sheep." I am instructed to draw your attention to the fact that Great Britain is now freer from cattlediseases than she has been for some years past, foot-and-mouth disease having been quite stamped out; also, that about four years ago this society drew the Government's attention to the necessity for closing the ports against the importation of stock, owing to the prevalence of disease in Great Britain. We now think that this restriction might safely be removed, if only for a short time, all due precaution being taken regarding quarantine regulations. ISO. 2. The Under-Secretary to the Secretary, Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Sir, —■ Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, 28th April, 1887. I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant, forwarding copy of a resolution of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association requesting the Government to remove the restrictions from the importation of cattle and sheep into New Zealand from the United Kingdom. In reply, I am directed by the Hon. the Colonial Secretary to inform you that inquiries are being made as to what action the other colonies propose to take in the matter. I have, &c, G. S. Cooper. M.
